03A Lovely Day in NYC
Claim a marble table and settle in. The room has been easing people into Saturdays since 1927.
Loop the fountain and give the chess corner a few minutes. Weekend mornings here are the Village at its best.
One block north of the park — a cobbled stable lane most people walk right past.
Lunch. Ask about the garden room; on a fine day it is one of the loveliest places to eat in the Village.
Enter near Gansevoort Street and wander north a stretch, or walk the length — the river stays with you either way.
Climb to the southwest overlook. This is the afternoon's view, and it costs nothing.
Dinner in the Barrow Street carriage house. Book well ahead, and dress for the room.

Forget the avenues. The city's real beauty lives on its smallest streets — cobbled lanes, cast-iron blocks, and bends in the grid where New York forgets to be in a hurry.
