ASTORIA, QUEENS
Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden
The last of New York's original beer gardens — Czech lagers under the trees since 1910.
Bohemian Hall opened in 1910 as the home of the Bohemian Citizens' Benevolent Society, and its walled garden is the last of the great old-world beer gardens that once dotted New York by the dozen. Long communal tables sit under mature trees, Czech and Slovak beers flow from the taproom, and the kitchen turns out kielbasa, schnitzel, and pierogi in proportions that assume you walked here.
On a summer Saturday it holds what feels like half of Queens — families, first dates, softball teams — and the mix is the point. More than a century on, it still functions as an actual community hall, which is why it feels nothing like the beer gardens that imitate it.
Editor’s tip
Go on a warm weekday evening, order a Czech pilsner and the kielbasa, and claim a tree-shaded end of a long table.
