UPPER EAST SIDE, MANHATTAN

Sant Ambroeus (Madison Avenue)

Milan on Madison — espresso at the counter, tramezzini, and old-world composure.

Sant Ambroeus brought Milanese caffè culture to Madison Avenue in the 1980s, and the flagship still runs on that grammar: a gleaming espresso and pastry counter up front, a hushed pink-toned dining room behind, and staff who treat a single macchiato with the same seriousness as a long lunch. The gelato case and the wrapped chocolates by the register are pure Milan.

It sits a block from the former Whitney building, which makes it the natural pause on an Upper East Side museum day. Standing at the counter with an espresso and a small sandwich — the tramezzini are the quiet stars — costs far less than a table and delivers the whole experience.

Editor’s tip

Do it the Milanese way: espresso and a tramezzino standing at the counter, then back out to the museums.
