BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN

The Long Island Bar

A revived 1950s luncheonette under original neon — home of New York's most-copied gimlet.

The vintage neon sign on the corner of Atlantic and Henry is original: The Long Island was a mid-century luncheonette run by the same family for decades before bartender Toby Cecchini — widely credited with inventing the Cosmopolitan — revived it in 2013, keeping the Formica, the deco booths, and the glow.

What changed is behind the bar. The gimlet here is one of the most copied cocktails in New York, the burger holds its own against any in the borough, and the room manages the rare trick of being a serious cocktail bar that feels like a diner at ease. It sits at the Heights' southern edge, a natural last stop after the Promenade.

Editor’s tip

Order the gimlet and the burger at the bar before 7 — the booths fill fast once the neon does its work.
