Manhattan
Upper West Side
Brownstones, bagels, and Central Park as the front yard.
The Upper West Side is the city's most domestic grand neighborhood. Monumental apartment houses line Central Park West and Riverside Drive, and between them run block after block of brownstones with dog walkers, strollers, and someone always carrying flowers. It is dense, but it moves at a family's pace.
Its great luxury is being bracketed by parks. Central Park sits along the entire eastern edge, with Bethesda Terrace, Bow Bridge, and the Mall's elm cathedral all a short walk in. Riverside Park holds the Hudson side. Locals treat both as extensions of their living rooms, and visitors are welcome to the same arrangement.
The food culture is old and unpretentious: appetizing counters, bagel lines on Sunday mornings, cookies worth planning around. This is a neighborhood built for routines, which makes it a surprisingly good place to borrow one for a day.

Local notes
Zabar's
The appetizing and grocery landmark at Broadway and 80th Street, in the neighborhood since the 1930s. Smoked fish, coffee by the pound, and a crowd that knows exactly what it came for. Go hungry and leave with a picnic for the park.
Barney Greengrass
On Amsterdam Avenue since 1929, calling itself the Sturgeon King and backing it up daily. Formica tables, brusque and efficient service, and sturgeon and eggs that explain the whole neighborhood. Weekend waits are part of the ritual.
Through the lens
Morning light from the east makes Central Park West's towers glow when shot from inside the park. Bethesda Terrace's arcade is best mid-morning on weekdays, before the crowds and the buskers settle in. In autumn, the Mall's elms peak late October into November and forgive almost any camera.
