DUMBO, BROOKLYN
Celestine
Eastern-Mediterranean cooking at the quiet end of the DUMBO waterfront, with the Manhattan Bridge in every window.
Celestine sits at the quiet eastern end of DUMBO's waterfront, on the ground floor of 1 John Street with Brooklyn Bridge Park's lawn on one side and the East River on the other. The kitchen cooks eastern-Mediterranean — flatbreads, mezze, whole fish — but the room's real material is the view: the Manhattan Bridge filling the windows, the skyline running off downriver.
Because it faces the Manhattan Bridge rather than the postcard-famous Brooklyn one, it draws fewer crowds than the DUMBO places three blocks west, and feels more like a restaurant than an attraction. Dinner at dusk is the move; brunch gets the same windows in soft morning light.
Editor’s tip
Time the reservation to sunset and walk Brooklyn Bridge Park's John Street section first — the lawn ends at the restaurant's door.
