DUMBO, BROOKLYN

Washington Street

The bridge-framed block that made DUMBO's name — and it looks exactly as advertised.

The tower over the cobbles, just after sunrise.

One cobblestoned block of Washington Street lines up the Manhattan Bridge's tower dead center between two walls of brick warehouses — and through the bridge's lower arch, if you stand in the right spot, the Empire State Building appears like a picture inside a picture. It is probably the most photographed street-level view in Brooklyn, and unlike many famous frames, it looks exactly as advertised.

The composition made the neighborhood's name literal: Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. Around the shot, DUMBO's old machine-works buildings have filled with studios and shops, and the Belgian block underfoot survives from the cart-traffic era. Expect company — wedding parties, influencers, tour groups — or come at sunrise, when the block is empty, the light comes up the river, and the bridge hums overhead to itself.

Editor’s tip

The Empire State Building sits inside the bridge's lower arch only from the Water Street end of the block — walk downhill until it clicks into place.
